There is consensus within the ecosystem that we need to cohere around the following five priorities: First, we need to improve the regulatory environment for MSMEs and cut red-tape that constrains entrepreneurs, ranging from informal micro-traders to high growth tech start-ups.

The aim of the Competition Awards is to provide national recognition to aspirant young entrepreneurs, existing youth-owned enterprises and individual entrepreneurs with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship among the youth in South Africa. 

The Department of Small Business Development is delighted to introduce to the public the Youth Enterprise Development Strategy (YEDS). South Africa is faced with the challenge of limited and poor participation of young people in the economy.

We are just coming out of what has turned out to be our deepest and most protracted recession. Our economy contracted by 6.4% in 2020. Further, as at June 2021 1.5 million jobs were shed. The South African government implemented a R500 billion package of economic relief aimed at mitigating the worst effects of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
